Begging

  • Me: [holds up scrap of paper] "What's this phone number?"
  • Beth: [age 7] "Oh, that's Tommy's number. He wants to have a play date."
  • Me: "Do you want to have a play date with him?"
  • Beth: [resignedly] "I guess I should. He is really begging me to have a play date."
  • Me: "Sweetheart, don't EVER do something just because a boy begs you."
  • Luke: [age 11, faux begging, as if on cue] "Oh Beth, would you please give me some of your candy?"
  • Beth: "Not a chance."
  • Luke: "C'mon, don't you love me?"
  • Me: "And REALLY don't do anything for a boy when he says THAT."
  • Beth: "Especially my brother!"
  • Me: "Especially anybody."
